Objectives

Individual Learning Session: Critical Incidents

At the end of this session you will:

  • be able to relate what they have learned in this session to their prior learning on "challenging behaviour" and positive behavioural support (PBS)
  • be able to explain a five stage model which sequences the events which a person experiences when a critical incident occurs
  • have had opportunities to apply their learning to a real case
  • have had opportunities to explore and evaluate their own employer's/ organisation's policy and practice guidance in relation to some of the topics covered
  • have an opportunity to assess their future learning and development needs in relation to the topics covered
The learning objectives in this session link in to the following units:
  • Childrens Induction Standards:
    • 3.5 Personal safety and security:
      • a - Know about the range of challenging behaviours presented by particular children and young people you work with
      • b - Understand how you manage challenging behaviour
      • c - Understand how you encourage positive behaviour


  • Level 2 Health and Social Care Diploma (including Generic, Dementia and Learning Disability Pathways):
    • Group C - Optional Competence Units:
      • HSC 3045 - Promote positive behaviour


  • Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Individuals with Learning Disabilities:
    • Optional Units – Group B:
      • HSC 3045 - Promote positive behaviour
      • HSC 3058 - Enable individuals with behavioural difficulties to develop strategies to change their behaviour
      • HSC 3065 - Implement the Positive Behavioural Support model
