Objectives

Individual Learning Session: Managing Medication - Medicines in the UK

At the end of this session you will:

  • have explored the definition of a medicine and the term 'drug'
  • have considered how the pharmaceutical industry undertake clinical trials with medicines
  • have an understanding of Homeopathy and how complementary medicines are registered
  • have knowledge of how medicines have a generic name and a brand/proprietary name
  • have an understanding of the importance of checking labels thoroughly before administering medicine/tablets
  • have knowledge of the three different classifications of medicines in the UK
  • have looked at how medication should be recorded on a MAR sheet and what information is recorded
  • have considered the legal requirement for particular information to appear on the dispensing label
The learning objectives in this session link in to the following units:
  • Childrens Induction Standards:
    • 3.4 Medication and health-care procedures:
      • b - Know about any infection-control needs and allergies of the children and young people you work with, and about any medication they are on
      • c - Know how to get or arrange first aid or medical treatment in an emergency
      • d - Know what you are not allowed to do, in relation to medication and health-care procedures, at this stage in your learning


  • Level 2 Health and Social Care Diploma (including Generic, Dementia and Learning Disability Pathways):
    • Group B - Optional Context/Specialist Knowledge Units:
      • DEM 305 - Understand the administration of medication to individuals with dementia using a person centred approach
    • Group C - Optional Competence Units:
      • HSC 3047 - Support use of medication in social care settings


  • Level 3 Health and Social Care Diploma (including Generic, Dementia and Learning Disability Pathways):
    • Group B – Optional context/specialist knowledge units:
      • DEM 305 - Understand the administration of medication to individuals with dementia using a person centred approach
